How Do Cold Sores Occur?

The herpes simplex labialis infection is one of the most common skin diseases affecting 95% of cold sore close uppeople worldwide.

The herpes simplex virus is a viral disease caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. It is transmitted via droplet infection, direct contact or smear infection. Most people concerned have already become infected by the virus in their youth. The disease is however in no way noticeable with all people. It normally takes 2 to 12 days (incubation time) from infection to the disease breaking out.

The virus enters the body, attacks the upper cells in the skin and also causes infection of their nerve cells. The virus in the mucous membrane and in a part of the infected nerve cells are eliminated in the first week. The virus can however – be almost “invisible” to the immune system and therefore continue to exist – in the surviving nerve cells.

These infected cells then serve as a lifelong viral reservoir. A “re-infection” will occur whenever the infected person’s immune system has been weakened. This is a kind of “refreshment” of the original virus intake. The virus then makes its way along the nerve tract in the opposite direction towards the skin. Causative agents include exposure to the sun rays, injuries, burns, or systematic causes such as stress, fever and menstruation.

The first signs of herpes simplex infection are a light to strong prickling or burning, itching and tension or more seldom, pain. Small blisters filled with fluid form shortly afterwards.

These will then burst a few hours or days later, they dry out and leave scabs, which heal up by themselves after 7 to 10 days. The complete course of herpes re-infection generally takes a total of between 10 and 14 days.

The respective skin and mucous membranes are very stressed during the various stages of the blister formation.
